Resource Update
Tom Palmer – author
I write football stories for Puffin Books, including the Foul Play and Football Academy series. I visit schools, libraries and festivals year round, talking to children and training staff to encourage boys and girls to enjoy reading.
Classroom Read
During the World Cup (June 11th to July 11th 2010) I will be publishing a
classroom read aimed at KS2 and KS3 children. The story will be called The
World Cup Mystery and will be published in 500 word chunks early on the
morning of every school day between those dates. The story will include
things that happened the day before in the tournament and will respond to
events as they unfold. The story is free and will be available to download
from the National Literacy Trust and www.tompalmer.co.uk from 6.00a.m. every
morning. Email me back if you'd like an alert when it starts
Materials
I have FREE A4 posters of my books, sample chapters, schools packs and red &
yellow referee cards available for schools and libraries. Please let me
know if you would like any and quantities.
I have recently written articles on reader development for the School
Library Association and Attain magazine and Puffin asked me to write a short
story for Puffin Post.
Books for 2010
I have three books coming out in the first half of 2010. Captain Fantastic -
the sixth Football Academy book - is just out and tells the story of a boy
struggling when his dad is sent to prison.
The third Football Detective book is out in May 2010. It is called Off Side
and is about a young Ghanaian footballer who is brought to the UK and
cheated by an unscrupulous agent. Its themes are fair trade, Africa and big
business takeovers. And football. Finally, The Secret Football Club is out in May too. It is set in a school where football is banned. How do the children and teachers cope?
Love Football: Love Reading, a reading guide I have written for the National
Literary Trust published in March, Love Football: Love Reading is a toolkit full of ideas to use during the 2010 World Cup finals, which start in June. It will be
available free to all schools and libraries. It has ideas about activities,
book groups and displays that can be used to hook football lovers into
loving reading too. It will be available on the National Literacy Trust
website.
